Job Stress and Blood Pressure

Vocational Stress and Blood Pressure

We all experience stress in our busy life styles. Whether you are a business executive, sales professional, self-employed business owner or work in any number of other vocations, you experience stress on the job. Most of these vocations require frequent use of the telephone, constant personal computer use, and in many cases extensive travel. Most jobs involve frequent meetings and deadlines to meet, adding additional stress.

As the day progresses, your blood pressure may rise without your notice in response to stress. You may have occasional blood pressure checks during physical or dental exams or at a local drug store pharmacy blood pressure station. These limited  readings provide only a "snap shot" of your blood pressure. Without blood pressure readings taken during the high stress periods of the work day, you will not be aware of the variability of your blood pressure..

Limited readings may suggest that your blood pressure is normal or "high normal"  (prehypertensive). With more readings over the course of the work day you may discover that your blood pressure is actually higher.

Looking Deeper

If you were to take several blood pressure readings during the day using an electronic monitoring device or a sphygmomanometer, similar to the professional model pictured here, you may discover that your blood pressure is reaching higher levels. In the morning and evening, your blood pressure may be appear to be normal, but may reach peaks above normal during the day.

Importance of Taking Measurements

The "Blood Pressure Profiler", an Excel* workbook, has been designed to track blood pressure hourly each day and to calculate the percentage of the readings that fall into generally accepted classifications. It calculates the high reading, the low reading, the cumulative average, and the median blood pressure. This information along with your physician's office testing and diagnosis can help you to learn if you have high blood pressure (hypertension). The Blood Pressure Profiler is not intended as a self-diagnostic tool, but the results it produces should be shared with your physician for further validation.

The Blood Pressure Profiler is available in four versions, the Standard Version, Advanced Statistics Version, Family Version, and Physicians Multi-patient Version, which can be downloaded from our "Download Center".

The Standard Version calculates percentage of readings by classification and highlights the high, the low, median, and overall average of measurement readings. It includes a bar chart of the percentage of readings by classification.

The Advanced Statistics Version includes additional features of hourly, daily, weekly averages, standard deviation, and a line graph with the weekly average trend over a twelve-hour period.

The Family Version includes additional features of unlimited family users under one Activation Key and alerts user if results are out of expected range based on standard deviation of measurements.

The Physicians Multi-patient Version includes additional features of unlimited patient users under one Activation Key, and 95% Confidence Level calculation on over-all average to increase physician confidence in accuracy of measurements.

Seeking Professional Advice

After a few trials using the Blood Pressure Profiler you will see if your blood pressure classification is beyond the normal range. You should make an appointment with your physician, so that you can share this information and get professional advice on how to lower your blood pressure. The physician will make independent measurements with a professional sphygmomanometer and may recommend that you begin life-style changes, such as weight loss, exercise, or prescription blood pressure medication.

Life Style Modification

Knowing the truth about your blood pressure classification may be the turning point for you to start a healthier life style. You can continue to monitor your blood pressure using the Blood Pressure Profiler to insure it is on track and in the normal classification range.
